CFIA Approved Food Safe Boiler Chemicals
Food safe boiler chemicals are a key part of proper water treatment for steam systems in facilities with food production, processing or packaging lines. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) requires regulated parties to comply with the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations with regards to boiler feed water and culinary steam. Carryover of boiler water additives into steam could bring off-flavours, or contaminate food and surfaces with chemicals. The continued evaporation of water in a steam system can result in the concentration of dissolved impurities that can precipitate in the boiler and affect the production of steam. Proper food safe water treatment can help avoid these issues before they start and keep harmful chemicals out of your food.
Miura Canada is proud to have had Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s W1, Food Safe approval for our Boilermate boiler chemicals since 2010. The main ingredient of Miura’s BOILERMATE® is silica, a corrosion inhibitor. Silica is a naturally-occurring material ideal for water treatment in Miura’s once-through boilers. We mix our Boilermate formulas in our Brantford, Ontario facility to ensure that consistent quality is maintained.
Safe Chemicals for
Culinary Steam
The CFIA says: Culinary steam is commonly used to prepare food. It can be a source of contamination when applied to a food (for example, in aseptic processing and packaging, or when cleaning or sterilizing food contact surfaces) ….
Since culinary steam may come into direct contact with a food, it is important that the water used to manufacture the steam is sourced, treated and handled in a way to minimize contamination. This includes using:
- boiler feed water that is potable. For more information on treating source water, refer to the document Water for use in the preparation of food.
- volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) and other chemicals to prevent corrosion and scale or to permit sludge removal from the boiler that are suitable for their intended use ….
Miura’s Boilermate chemicals have been given permission by the CFIA to;
“use of the subject product in boiler water systems where the steam produced may come in contact with food in food processing establishments, provided that: a) it is used in the minimum amount required to achieve its intended technical effect under good manufacturing practice (GMP) conditions and used only as directed by the company’s representative; and b) the amount of steam in contact with food”
Miura Canada is proud to be able to provide clean, food safe steam with Boilermate water treatment chemicals. We pride ourselves on our complete, turn-key solutions for any industry and many of our boiler units and water treatment systems have found their home in food and beverage facilities across Canada and the world. Meat and poultry processors, dairies and cheesemakers, heating kettles and firing up ovens Miura’s steam is there, clean and reliable.
All-in-One Boiler Water Treatment
Complete boiler feed water solution designed to protect against corrosion and small amounts of hardness.
- Corrosion Inhibitor: Silica prevents corrosion by facilitating a passivation layer to protect tubes against chloride, sulfate, oxygen, and other corrosive ions.
- pH Booster: By raising the pH, it significantly reduces corrosion rates in the boiler
- Scale Dispersant: To prevent any scale formation, a minimal amount of EDTA is injected to attack the ≤1 ppm of hardness that may leak past the softener.
- No activation time required: Unlike oxygen scavengers, the passivation silica layer form immediately and does not require activation time.
- CFIA W1 Food Plant Approved

Scale Dispersant and Remover
Instead of soaking the scale to dissolve it, this chemical works by chelating the scale and slowly removing it.
- No Shutdown Time: It removes the scale without stopping boiler operation
- Chelating: To prevent and remove scale, the chemical bonds with the hardness instead of hardness bonding with the tube walls.
- Scale Monitor Temperature: Along with the Miura boiler’s scale monitor thermocouple, it monitors the presence and removal of scale from the boiler tubes during boiler operation.

pH Booster
- Sulfite: moderate concentration of sulfites to neutralize pH
- pH Booster: By raising the pH, it significantly reduces corrosion rates in the boiler
- Scale Dispersant: Scavenging type with dispersant to prevent any scale formation
